General Manager's Observations on the Annual Accounts, Statistics, etc: May 22nd 1935

Income & Expenditure Account.

The Account follows the lines of previous years and the Auditor, who will be in attendance, will deal with the individual items as usual.

Balance Sheet.

After conferring with the Treasurer, a note has been added to the Balance Sheet explaining that the Corporation have a considerable holding in Government and Trustee Securities against the money at call.

The savings effected on Head Office contracts, which was reserved last year and has not been required, is explained in this year's Balance Sheet.

In accordance with the usual procedure, the Auditor will deal with the individual items.

Depositors' Balances.

The increase for the year amounts to £1,862,405. 13. 10d., every branch records an increase. The substantial increases at Bearwood, Erdington, Small Heath, Hall Green, Lozells, Birchfield and Acock's Green are worthy of note. The continued increase at Harborne justifies the action the General Purposes Sub-Committee have decided to take in the way of providing more commodious premises. It is also gratifying to note the increase at  Cotteridge. Solihull Branch, which was opened during the year, has accumulated very satisfactory balances, particularly when it is borne in mind that the Branch is only open on three days per week. Shirley Branch has not progressed to the same extent, but this is doubtless due to the situation of the Branch. Housing developments in the Solihull and Shirley areas are such as to make it difficult to decide the most convenient position for a Bank, but when more experience has been gained the Committee will be able to consider the matter. The other Branch outside the City area, viz, Oldbury, again shows a substantial increase in the balances.

It will be noticed that 43 offices out of 58 now show balances of over £100,000, but the very slow progress made by Heybarnes Branch gives cause for concern.

Open Accounts.

The total increase in open accounts is 18,128 each branch recording an increase except Sparkbrook, where there is a reduction of 34. The most important increases are at Acock's Green (737); Birchfield (694); Erdington (681); Bearwood (664); Hall Green (661); Perry Common (656); Head Office (592); Northfield (518); and Oldbury (514). There are now 680 accounts at Solihull, and 629 at Shirley.

Transactions.

The total increase in Savings Bank transactions is 121,607, each branch recording an increase except Kings Heath and Selly Park, where the reductions are 507 and 268 respectively. The reduction at Kings Heath is, no doubt, due to the new Brandwood Branch. The most important increases have occurred at Bearwood (5,798); Perry Common (4,923); Acock's Green (4,704); Birchfield (4,168); Yardley (4,056); and Selly Oak (4,013).

The total increase in the number of Corporation Accounts dealt with is 41,865, each branch recording an increase. The most important increases have occurred at Yardley, Hall Green, Brandwood, Sparkhill, Erdington and Birchfield. It is interesting to find that, despite the provision of show rooms and offices by the different Corporation Departments where accounts can be paid, the Bank continues to be used for the purpose to an increasing extent.

Annual Report to Council.

The form of the report to the Council has been altered so as to deal simply with the position for the year. The publication of year by year statistics under various headings in the body of the report is hardly the object of an annual report. Every figure of importance is included in the present report.
