Birmingham Corporation Savings Bank:
Report by J P Hilton - January 25th 1918
In this report Mr Hilton offers some explanations for the level of withdrawals experienced by the Bank. In addition to the expected
withdrawals over the Christmas period, a major factor was a fund raising campaign known as the Tank Bank Week. This campaign used
examples of the newly invented tank to promote the sale of War Bonds and War Saving Certificates issued by the Government. The tanks
visited towns and cities across the country creating an inter-City competitiveness - Birmingham was second only to Glasgow in the
amount raised with the sum of £6.7-million being collected.
